The Power and Pitfalls of Using Simulation in AHA Courses

Geoffrey T. Miller, EMT-P & Angel A. Brotons, EMT-P

Fee: $120

The use of simulation is exploding in AHA courses and in health care education in general.

Exceptional training is a key driver to use simulation in the clinical training environment. What does the research tell us about the POWER and PITFALLS of inserting simulation into AHA courses? Come learn how to harness the power (and avoid the pitfalls) when integrating simulation into your AHA courses.

Afternoon Pre-Conference Workshops

to
5:00 p.m.

Resuscitation Redux: Thinking Out of the "Blocks"

Facilitated by Edward Stapleton, EMT-P & Jay Gardiner, EMT-CC
Guest Speakers: Tom Aufderheide, MD; Vinay Nadkarni, MD; Benjamin Abella, MD; Lance Becker, MD; Mary Fran Hazinski, RN; Paul Pepe, MD & Jerry Potts, PhD

Fee: $120

(Repeated on Wednesday morning.)

Most of us aren't even aware of the intellectual walls that block us from going back and seeing a problem from a different perspective.

The AHA 2010 Guidelines established a solid foundation upon which numerous innovative strategies for improving survival from sudden cardiac arrest could be built. This workshop takes the next bold step in that process, helping participants move beyond traditional models to challenge ourselves to envision a world in which SCA is treated as an urgent matter of public health, where saves are the rule, not the exception. This means reconsidering some of our most basic assumptions about our methods and systems of care.

Faculty and participants will collaborate for a lively discussion of ideas– some radical–including new ways to enhance bystander CPR, future clinical interventions, innovative educational methods and a fresh look at response strategies/system design.

The session is for everyone with an interest in the future of cardiac resuscitation, from medical directors, to instructors, to educators, to clinical practitioners, in and out of the hospital. Popular presenters Ed Stapleton and Jay Gardiner collectively have more than 75 years of experience in the field of EMS and ECC. They will be joined by a "who's who" list of guest speakers, all designed to ignite new ways of thinking about this important topic.

Training in the Electronic Age: Implementing e-Learning and Blended Solutions

Ken Johnson, AHA Account Manager–ECC Programs; Norberto Monell, EMT-P; Felix Marquez, Jr., EMT-P; & Richard Slade, EMT-P

Fee: $120

Web-based training and distance learning programs are an increasingly popular way to offset the costs and limitations of in-person lectures. A blended solution combines aspects of on-line training with traditional classroom teaching. This approach can benefit the learner, the training staff and the organization's bottom line.

This session specifically looks at how AHA is implementing blended solutions for its training. You'll learn the advantages and disadvantages of this approach, pitfalls of implementation to avoid and will receive hands-on experience with an e-simulation scenario in an electronic environment.

All Day Pre-Conference Workshops

8:00 a.m.
to
5:00 p.m.

Practical Implementation of Therapeutic Hypothermia after Cardiac Arrest: A Hands-on Approach

Benjamin Abella, MD; Marion Leary, RN & Audrey Blewer, MPH

Fee: $210

Therapeutic hypothermia is a crucial lifesaving treatment for patients after resuscitation from cardiac arrest. Many hospitals and EMS systems either have implemented protocols to employ therapeutic hypothermia or have expressed interest in doing so — yet many practical questions remain. Who should be included or excluded for this therapy? What adverse effects need monitoring, and how should they be treated? How do we design and implement a protocol? In this PRACTICAL AND INTERACTIVE course, learn from a team of nationally recognized educators that include a physician, critical care nurse and public health specialist who are leaders in the field. This course is designed to help clinical providers better implement this major therapeutic advance treatment for patients after cardiac arrest.
